On a chilly January night in 2008, I noticed bees flying in and out of the taillight of my "waiting to be restored" '69 Chevy Nova. Worried for the safety of Siera, my Jack Russell terrier, I hatched a plan. Clad in jeans, sweatshirt, and a makeshift bee veil, I approached the hive hidden in my car’s trunk. With shop vac in hand, I sucked up nearly 10,000 bees and in doing so, got popped in the middle of my forehead with a painful sting for my efforts! As the dust settled, I cautiously opened the trunk. There, glistening in the flashlight’s glow, was a massive hive on the passenger side of the trunk lid, dripping with honey. Curiosity piqued; I tasted the golden nectar through my mask. It was a revelation! I had no idea that real honey, pure and sweet tasted so good. This ignited my next bold move: a bee box.
I gathered the remaining bees and set them up in a new hive in my backyard. Unsure if the queen was among them, I waited. A week later, peeking into the hive, I saw them building comb and making honey. Success! I was hooked! My backyard had become a sweet, buzzing paradise and thus began my 17-year passion entering into the incredible world of the honeybee.
Recently, my wife has joined me in this incredible journey, leaving a long career in the corporate world. Together, we are now fully immersed in the world of beekeeping, sharing our passion and dedication to these amazing creatures.
